The Adriatic for the Adriatic
At the Hotel Adriatic, we recognise the growing threat to the biodiversity of the sea posed by plastic pollution, so in 2018 we made a decision to become the first hotel in Croatia without disposable plastic, which we replaced with sustainable alternatives. The Hotel Adriatic is the leader of an initiative for a workplace and holidays without plastic waste. The implementation of this initiative involves the active participation of the hotel’s employees, its suppliers and partners, as well as guests and citizens who use the hotel’s services on a daily basis.
Our contribution
Aiming to be the first hotel without disposable plastic in Croatia, in 2018 the Hotel Adriatic started to use paper straws instead of plastic ones. In 2019, the Hotel Adriatic entirely eliminated disposable plastic products for guests in rooms, bars and restaurants (bathroom accessories, drinks bottles, bags, containers, cups, etc.) At the hotel, we only use biological cleaning products. The Hotel Adriatic encourages collaboration with suppliers whose products (cosmetics, printed materials, and staff uniforms) are made of natural, biological, ecologically friendly or recycled materials.
In addition to not using disposable plastic, guests of the Hotel Adriatic can opt for ecologically conscious experiences: observing dolphins with local dolphin whisperers, exploring Rovinj’s organic market, or meeting award-winning Istrian organic olive oil manufacturers. On Earth Day, 24 April 2019, a panel was organised to present the goals of the Adriatic for the Adriatic project, and a discussion was held on recycled materials. The second panel meeting of the Adriatic for the Adriatic project was held on WORLD OCEANS DAY, 8 June. Guests from the Ruđer Bošković Institute Centre for Marine Research in Rovinj, marine biologists and the founders of the project spoke about a sustainable way of life, work and play.
